Public Speaking and Debate Programs

FIYO is actively engaged in advocating for mandatory debating sessions in order to promote the culture of critical thinking, public speaking, raising self esteem and research among students especially girls in both primary and secondary schools. In addition to the advocacy campaign, FIYO is Involved in organizing and supporting 20 pilot debating clubs in both primary and secondary schools as to show case the impotance of debate and public speaking.

 

Through this program FIYO carried out an inter-primary school tournament on public speaking at G.S Kicukiro an event organized by FIYO in partnership with REMA, RSSB. Students from different primary schools of Kigali gathered to present their presentations on the role of children in Environment protection, impotances of public speaking sessions and the children's rights. The essays were both done in English and Kinyarwanda. After presentation that took almost 3 hours, the judges declared speakers from Groupe scolaire St Joseph winners in English speakers and Groupe scolaire de Kicukiro winners in Kinyarwanda.


In his remark, the guest of Honor Hon Mporanyi, emphasized on the role of such competitions saying that they are ideal trainings to Rwandan future leaders from his own experience he observed that nowdays youth are lucky "When I was elected mayor for my very first time I was scared to pronounce the speech, I was shaky, sweating all over the body; and it was because I had not have such trainings; so, you are lucky to have public speaking competitions that will prevent you facing such kinds of problems." said honorable Mporanyi.


On the side of Teachers, those competitions arouse their students to make research and become more confident. He requested  FIYO to organize more competitions and reach many schools in it's capacity
